What is a crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth covering the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance.
The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
What is the age limit of a crown application?
Crowns can be used for any healthy person of any age.Crowns can only be fitted to adult teeth.
Fitting the crown:
Fitting the crown needs to be done over the course of at least two appointments.
First we have to prepare the tooth. This involves removing most of the outer surface, leaving a strong inner core. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same as the thickness of the crown. Once the tooth is shaped, we make a mould of it, which then goes together with details of the appropiate shade to our dental laboratory where the crown is custom made for that tooth.
Whilst the crown is being made we will fit a temporary crown. We do this free of charge but in the UK you should expect to pay in the region of £30 for a temporary crown.
At the next appointment we fit your custom made crown. This usually entails making a number of adjustments until you are completely satisfield with the fit and appearance of your new crown. The crown is then permanently into place. We use special dental cement that will hold it in place permanently.
Fitting a dental crown therefore requires at least two treatment sessions and time must be allowed for the work at the laboratory. In the UK you should expect this to extend over one or two weeks. At our dental surgery in Fethiye however our patients can expect to wait approximatley 3 days.
Care of Crowns:
After the crown has been fitted it is important for the patient to keep it clean. Instruction on the care and cleaning of the crown will be issued by us following your treatment.
Types of Crowns:
We have two types of crowns, please see definitions below:
Pure Porcelain: We advise that these types of crowns are only fitted K9 to K9. Please contact for further details.
Metal Based: This type of crown can be used on any type of tooth. Very durable and long lasting.
Advantages of crowns:
A correctly fitted cosmetic crown is virtually indistinguishable from the original tooth
Newer crown materials, ceramics have virtually eliminated the dark gum line problem associated with older crown materials
Crowns can be used in conjunction with other cosmetic dentistry techniques to create a full "smile makeover" to enhance appearance and confidence
